Established in 2001, the .NAME generic top-level extension is the sole TLD meant for personal sites only. These domain names can be personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other labels people are famous by. At the beginning, just 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you desired to acquire john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already registered 3rd-level domains remained operational.
